This all started with the #AskELJames thread, a thread that contained a lot of trolling, a lot of pertinent comments, very few unbarbed questions, and the reminder that Fifty Shades of Grey started life as a Twilight fanfic. I can see it now.
Let's be honest, FsoG is not a great book. I'm not big on erotica, and the only other erotic books I've read are in Kit Rocha's Beyond series. These books combine Dystopia with Erotica and I'm not embarrassed to say that they're great. The world is amazing, and the characters are complex. Fifty doesn't even compare.
But how does Fifty compare to Twilight? Er...Twilight definitely beats Fifty in the prose department but I've got to say that I think Fifty has a slightly more interesting plot. While you can think what you like about BDSM, at least the overbearingness and assholery in Fifty in consensual, and involves adults. One of the things that frustrates me most about Twilight is that an entire generation of teenagers now views co-dependency as romantic. While I'm still somewhat curious about the series storyline, I can't bring myself to read the rest of it. I'll watch the movies instead, and I won't even feel like a book traitor doing it.
